The following is an example of Mr. Maksimovic’s teaching methods.
Depending on the number of students, the chess class will usually be divided into two groups-the more advanced students in one group and the less advanced in another. All aspects of chess are covered, and the students are given many handouts to reinforce the class discussions. Frequent review and homework assignments help to strengthen the students’ understanding of the material, and periodic testing insures that each student’s progress and potential is monitored.
Many studies have shown that students who study chess also demonstrate improvement in other academic areas and indeed, even in other aspects of life. The growth of scholastic chess in the U. S. has been remarkable in the last few years. Every school provides plenty of opportunities for students to excel and compete in sports and other physical activities. Many schools now realize that studying chess gives students an opportunity to develop their creativity and imagination and to compete in the even more important mental arena.
